Research indicates there are social, economic, behavioral and biological reasons for this:

  • Black women are more likely to have diabetes, heart disease and obesity;
  • Black women are less likely to be breastfed after childbirth;
  • Black women are more likely to have inadequate health insurance or access to health care facilities; and
  • Black women get more aggressive forms of the disease and are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age.

Research also shows that black women partake in products with worrisome ingredients, such as:

  • Skin lighteners;
  • Hair relaxers;
  • Brazilian blow out treatments; and
  • Acrylic nails.
