The Return of HBO’s ‘Insecure’ Was Overshadowed By Sorority Controversy

I have truly enjoyed all 4 seasons of Insecure and was really looking forward to a juicy Season 5 opener! And it didn’t disappoint!

We were reminded about how the girls met and we got to see Issa’s decision about Lawrence.

However, the days after the opener aired have been full of tweets and posts by my Sorors and others about one of the characters proudly portraying a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc.

Many are proud that the sorority was prominently showcased in the popular African American show. While many others were offended that someone that is not a member of the sorority would dare to wear the sorority colors, letters and God forbid- the shield. 😱

Issa jokingly responded to the drama by saying she’ll tell HBO to delete an upcoming episode to appease the offended folks. 😂

The AKA corporate team is aware of the issue and appears to be finding a way to address it.

As a member of the sorority, I was not offended by the fact that a fictional character played a member of the sorority- especially since I believe it was done in a positive light.

Yes! That’s me! 👆🏾😁💗💚

But why did they choose the Insecure character that fits this sororities’ dated stereotype of lighter skin and long hair…? 🧐

But other than that, it was all good for me!

What do you think?

And here’s my shameless plug for a Sorority themed t-shirt I designed 😁:
