MD Man Recipient of Transplanted Pig Heart

A Maryland man has lived for several days with a heart from a gene-edited pig his chest. This amazing surgery occurred at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The heart came from a 1 year old, 240 pound gene-edited pig that was bred specifically for this purpose.

Mr. Dave Bennett didn’t qualify for the waitlist for a human heart because he had a history of not following doctor’s orders, missing medical appointments and discontinuing prescribed medications. People with that historical behavior don’t tend to do well with an organ transplant.

It is possible that after six months of being a good patient, he’ll be a better candidate for a heart transplant, and the pig heart will serve only as a bridge.

Good luck to Mr. Bennet with his new heart and congratulations to the University of Maryland Medical Center for this tremendous achievement. May this bring hope to the many people in need of a heart, kidney or other organ.
