Valerie Johnson is a DMV area author that specializes in finding creatively successful ways to teach math to children. She has been a math educator and instructional leader for over 30 years.
When her debut book was released in August 2022, 1 2 3 Count with Me on Granddad’s Farm, it ranked #1 in two of Amazon Kindle children’s categories: Baby & Toddler Counting Books and Children’s Nonfiction Animal Books. The book also won The Literary Titan Gold Book Award, The Firebird Book Award, and The BookFest Award.
Her debut book was highlighted in Publishers Weekly: BookLife as September’s Indie Book Spotlight and was highlighted in Black Enterprise online Magazine as well.

1 2 3 Count with Me on Granddad’s Farm, is for children ages 3 – 7. The two important educational aspects of the book—help make math easy to understand, engaging & fun and empower parents to support learning at home with tips, tools, and hands-on tasks.
The Discussion Starters, questions in the back of the book, help young readers comprehend and analyze the story for deeper meaning. The visual models (counting dots, fingers, animals, etc.) on the following pages help little ones to dive deeper into counting and reasoning mathematically.
Valerie’s passion and purpose is to inspire, teach, and empower future generations. She started her own publishing imprint to leave a legacy and something tangible for generations of young readers to cherish – math-themed books. She also strives to empower parents to support learning at home by writing and publishing children’s books.
Valerie is currently working on her second book (fractions picture book) and a consumable writing journal for kids.
